Flack, Nelson Pvt. – Co. H, 148th PA Infantry

Nelson Flack was born on September 12, 1830 in Centre County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John & Susanna Flack and the youngest of nine children. Nelson married Jane H. Brown on June 1, 1850 at Washington Furnace, Centre County, Pennsylvania. 

             Their first child, John N. Flack, was born on July 7, 1853 at Bellfonte, Centre Co, Pennsylvania. He married Lucretia Housel, probably before 1874. From this line descends a member of Laura Belle Stoddard Tent 22, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865.

             Nelson Flack enlisted as a Private in Company “H”, Pennsylvania 148thInfantry Regiment on August 8th, 1862. He was mustered out at the end of the war on June 1st, 1865.  He died July 29, 1908 at Bellefonte, Centre Co, Pennsylvania and is buried in the Union Cemetery in Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania. His wife, Jane (Brown) Flack, was born in 1833 and died in 1893. She is also buried in the Union Cemetery in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.

             Nelson’s obituary appeared in the Centre (PA) Democrat on Aug 6, 1908 and reads as follows:  

“Nelson Flack, an aged gentleman who made his home with his son George B. Flack, near the Nittany Furnace, died Wed. evening of last week of bronchial trouble. Mr. Flack had been confined to his bed for the past 10 months. He was aged about 78 years and has been a resident of Bellefonte for the past 48 years. During the dark days of the Civil War he heeded his country’s call and enlisted in Co. H, 148 Regt., P.V.I, and served for 2 years and 10 months. Surviving him are 4 sons and 2 daughters as follows: John, George B., James, and Jerry, all of Bellefonte; Mrs. James McKinley of Milesburg and Mrs. Miriam Irvin of Sharon, Pa. The funeral took place Sat. afternoon at 2 o’clock from the United Evangelical church. Interment in the Union cemetery.”

               Nelson and Jane had eight children: John N. (1853-1919), Mary (b. about 1854), George B. (1856-1911), Nancy J. (b. abt 1859), Margaret E. (b, abt 1861), Marion R. (b. abt 1866), James (b. abt 1869), and Jeremiah (1874-1950). In September 1860 when the 1860 census was taken, the family was living in Spring Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania and Nelson Flack gave his occupation as “Teamster”. A teamster was a person who drove a team of draft animals, usually a wagon drawn by oxen, horses or mules to haul goods or people.

                 Nelson Flack’s Civil War Regiment, the 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, was recruited from Centre, Clarion, Indiana, and Jefferson Counties and was organized September 1, 1862. The Regiment participated in many major battles of the Civil War including Chancellorsville, Cold Harbor, Gettysburg, Petersburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Appomattox. They were mustered out on June 1, 1865.  The Regiment, which numbered 1370 men at the start of the war, lost a total of 397 men: 12 Officers and 198 Enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 4 Officers and 183 Enlisted men by disease.
