• Born 20 Aug 1842, Barren County, KY,  s/o Phillip Trapendance LEWIS (b. 13 Nov 1808, Barren County, KY  — d. 18 Feb 1889), and wife Catherine BRIDGES (b. 6 Dec 1812 — d. 25 Nov 1895).
• John was married 5 Oct 1865 in Pittsburg, Hickory Co, MO, to Sarah Jane PITTS (b. 9 May 1844, Pittsburg, Hickory Co, MO — d. 1 Apr 1895 Preston, Hickory Co, MO.)

John and Sarah Jane had at least one child, daughter Ida Belle Lewis, b. 27 Oct 1881 Preston, Hickory Co, MO, from whom descends this line to the member of Laura Belle Stoddard Tent 22, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865.

John Lewis was enrolled 1 March 1862 in Co C 8th MO S. W. [South West] Cav. and was honorably discharged at St. Louis, MO on the 30 Mar 1865.  [Source: Civil War Pension File #837.746: Declaration for Invalid Pension, dated 24 Jul 1890]

“I  as a Justice of the Peace on 5th day of October 1865 solemnized the rites of Matrimony between John Lewis and Sarah J. Pitts at her father’s residence in Hickory County Missouri. Neither of them had ever been married before. I knew both from childhood, I lived within from three fourths of a mile to eight miles of them all the time from their childhood up to their marriage.
