“I as a Justice of the Peace on 5th day of October 1865 solemnized the rites of Matrimony between John Lewis and Sarah J. Pitts at her father’s residence in Hickory County Missouri. Neither of them had ever been married before. I knew both from childhood, I lived within from three fourths of a mile to eight miles of them all the time from their childhood up to their marriage. I was intimately acquainted with both of their families.” Signed by Josiah E Rutherford. [Source: Civil War Pension File #837.746: General Affidavit for Any Purpose, dated 18 Mar 1895]
