http://www.nps.gov/cwss/index.html Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Sytem to look up Veterans and other avenues of interest relating to them. On the search try putting in just the last name since many went by initials for their first and middle names.
http://www.archives.gov/ The National Archives has many links and how to order their forms to request a copy of your Veteran’s records. Put on the form that you would like to be notified of all existing records and the cost.
http://www.google.com/ There are other search engines. Put in the search box the State your Veteran served and other keywords like research, Civil War, Unit name & number and also his name. You might find a distant relative who has put their info and/or scanned paperwork and pictures up on a genealogy or personal website.
http://civilwarroster.com/ This has a lot of information, but it is not put out by the National or State governments so be sure you cross reference their data.
