Marvin Perry was born 3 October 1830, at Putnam Valley, near Peekskill, New York. His parents were Reuben Perry and Lorinda Pratt. He married Elizabeth Frances Brown on 22 February 1865. They had two children. The first was Villa Mae who died at age seven. The second child was Lorinda “Lora” DeForest Perry, who was my grandmother. Marvin Perry died on 15 December 1913 at Monmouth, Illinois, just a few weeks after his wife had died.

Marvin Perry enrolled in Company H of the 45th Illinois Regiment of Infantry on 15 November 1861 and was honorably discharged 11 March 1863. He had been hospitalized for almost a year before he was discharged. That same day, in St. Louis, Missouri, he enlisted in Company H of the Mississippi Marine Brigade as a Private. At the time, this outfit could only enlist men who had been disabled from the war. Marvin was honorably discharged at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on 23 January 1865.
