Smith, Samuel L., Pvt., Co. G, 116th OH Infantry

Samuel L. Smith was born 20 Sep 1818 in Guernsey Co. Ohio to Andrew Smith and Nancy Baird and died 06 Mar 1905 in Savonburg, Allen Co., Kansas.  He lived in Meigs Co., Ohio near Harrisonville, during boyhood and up to his enlistment.  He enlisted at age 44 in the military service at Harrisonville, Meigs Co., Ohio on the 13th of Aug. 1862 as private of G  Co. 116th Reg. Ohio to serve for 3 years and was honorably discharged the 23rd of July 1865.  He is buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Bourbon Co., Kansas with a Civil War marker.

While at Romney, West Virginia on the 23rd Jan. 1863 he took a severe cold which resulted in disease of the lungs.  He received treatment by the Regimental Surgeon and was sent to Taylor General Hospital at Winchester, Virginia.  He entered hospital on or about the 20th day of March 1863 and rejoined his company at Winchester, Virginia on the 24th day of May 1863 and remained until disc

harged.  His company was in action June 15 1863 at Winchester, Virginia, the Second

Battle of Winchester, and he was listed as MIA – Prisoner of War.

After his discharge he resided in Pike Co. Ohio and worked as a farmer.  He applied for a pension in 1879 due to disease of the lungs contracted at Romney, Virginia.  At age 61 he was described as 5 ft. 7 ½ inches, dark complexion, dark eyes and dark hair.  In his pension papers he stated, “The Battle of Winchester went off on 15th of June ’63 – the Millroy Skedaddle – and I was captured and taken round to Richmond and deposited on Belle Island.”

He married Fanny Davis on 10 Jun 1847 in Meigs County, Ohio and they had six girls and four boys.  Their first daughter Charlotte A. Smith married Jacob Brenner 07 Jun 1874 in Porterville, Kansas.  Brenner was a Civil War veteran who served in Co. D 93rd Illinois Infantry.
